FSRS, SM-2 and HLR: choosing Lexora’s learning engine
The useful learning engine is one you can keep studying with. Lexora - SAT Prep offers FSRS, SM-2 and HLR for scheduling vocabulary reviews. FSRS is the recommended default. You can leave it selected and spend your first sessions learning words before deciding whether to compare another option.

What are the three choices?
| Setting | How Lexora presents it | A practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| FSRS | Recommended and default | Keep this if you are starting and have no reason to compare another scheduler. |
| SM-2 | Classic | Consider it if you prefer a familiar classic review system. |
| HLR | Experimental | Try it as an experiment, keeping that qualifier in mind. |
Each option changes review scheduling. This is a choice of review system, not a promise about a test score or a guaranteed number of words you will remember.
Where to change the learning engine
- Notice your current setting first. Check the words you have studied and the reviews currently due. This gives you something concrete to compare.
- Open Settings. In the learning settings, find Learning Engine.
- Read the options. The choices are FSRS (Recommended), SM-2 (Classic) and HLR (Experimental).
- Select one and let the switch finish. Lexora migrates progress when switching. You do not need to use Reload SAT Vocabulary or Reset App Data to change the engine.
- Check your study history afterward. Continue with the same words. If migration fails, the app shows an error and retains the previous setting rather than treating the switch as completed.
Compare the review routine
Keep your study habit reasonably consistent. Notice whether the due queue is manageable, whether you are recalling the words when they return, and whether difficult words are getting enough attention. Changing the setting after every session makes those observations harder to interpret.
If you are getting words wrong, first check what you are doing with the card. Read the example, make a useful memory tip, and answer without looking back. A different algorithm cannot replace understanding the word in context.
Scheduled review and extra practice have different jobs
Your learning engine schedules reviews. Lexora’s extra practice lets you revisit studied or weaker words, preview new vocabulary or try a short random quiz without changing that review schedule. Use scheduled study to check recall over time and extra practice when you want more time with a particular group of words.
Choose one word you found difficult and pay attention when it returns. Can you explain its meaning and use it in a new sentence? That gives the next review a concrete purpose, whichever engine you use.
